Plans: Every plan includes a limited number of free on-demand metafield coverage scans. Pro / Unlimited unlock the full Data Doctor toolkit (weekly reports, profiles, additional scan types).
Before you start
- Create at least one product or product variant metafield definition in Shopify (or in the app under metafield definitions), if you want metafield gap rows in the report.
- Open Data Doctor → Run new scan (or equivalent New scan action).
Steps
- Choose scan type Metafield coverage (default) if you are asked to pick a type.
- Choose which definitions to include:
- All product & variant definitions, or
- Only selected definitions (tick the list).
- Optional filters (if shown): collections, product IDs, or other limits your shop supports.
- Confirm your email for the completion notice (if prompted).
- Start the scan.
The job runs in the background. Large catalogs can take several minutes.
What this scan checks
On a metafield coverage run, Data Doctor typically reports:
- Metafield gaps — products/variants missing a value (or empty) for definitions you included.
- Missing Standard Product Taxonomy category — products that still need a Shopify category (useful for native product CSV).
- Variant scan — rule-based checks only (no AI), for example:
- Generic option names (e.g. “Option1”)
- Inconsistent spellings of the same option value across variants
- Product-level metafields that may disagree with variant options
- Partial coverage on important variant metafields from your definition list
Details and examples are in the variant scan CSV on the report.
Tips
- A new definition with no values yet will list many products/variants until you fill values—that is expected.
- You can leave the page; use Scan history or wait for the email.
- Fix gaps in Shopify Admin, or use the app’s CSV import tools when you have many rows.
